Plot

Act One

Scene 1

The play opens in the living room of a small, London house. Pam shares the house with her mother and father, but this does not stop her from picking up a stranger and bringing him home for sex. As they make themselves comfortable on the sofa, Len introduces himself to Pam. He is perturbed when Harry, Pam’s father, comes into the room, sees them, and immediately leaves again. Pam, however, is not bothered, and merely notes that her father is getting ready to go out to work. Len has been put off his stride and decides to have a smoke instead. The couple wait for Harry to finally leave, and question each other about their sex lives. Both are comfortable with casual sex and Len is itching to carry on. He taunts Harry through the closed door, suggesting Harry is enjoying listening to them. Finally, Harry leaves for work and Len and Pam settle down on the sofa.

Scene 2

In the next scene, Pam and Len are sitting in a rowboat in a local park. Len is now a lodger in Pam’s
