Harry Hope’s rundown saloon is filled with men from all walks of life: former anarchist “foolosopher” Larry Slade, bickering Boer War veterans Captain Lewis and General Wetjoen, formerly wealthy African-American gambler Joe Mott, and many more. This diverse cohort of bar rats share little in common beyond their perpetual need for another drink. When the rag-tag group’s favorite visitor, charismatic salesman Theodore “Hickey” HIckman, appears, things take a turn. Hickey is newly sober, and urges the men to find a “new life of peace and contentment where no pipe dreams can ever nag at you again.” Thrown into disarray by their fervent friend, the men at Harry Hope’s bar are forced to confront their life choices, see the reality of who they are for the first time in many years-- and bear the consequences of that devastating insight.
