Plot

Part One, Act One, Scene One

In a home in a rural village in Spain, a Bridegroom tells his Mother that he is leaving for the vineyards. The Mother is terrified when he leaves home because her husband and other son were murdered and she fears the same thing will happen to him, her last surviving family. The son and husband, who are buried on the property nearby, were killed by members of the Felix family, so they have become the Mother’s enemy. She cannot let it go and the Bridegroom desperately tries to stop her from speaking of their deaths, to no avail. Along with worrying about his safety, the Mother is suspicious of the Bride that her son has chosen for himself. She knows little about the young woman, other than that she has no mother and she used to be romantically involved with someone else, but the Bridegroom tries to convince her that it is a good match. She agrees to go meet the woman and her father the next day, and her son finally leaves for the vineyard. A Neighbor
