We are often asked where the “Nash” in our theatre’s name comes from. The answer is that the original pro-am Nash Street Theatre, established in 1994, was based in Nash Street, Rosalie and became simply Nash Theatre when the group moved its base to Balfour Street in New Farm.
In 1996 Nash Theatre was forced to close as a pro-am enterprise and was replaced by a community theatre group which took over the Balfour Street facilities, added “New Farm” to its name and became an incorporated body.
New Farm Nash Theatre Inc. soon gained a reputation for producing stimulating theatre of a high standard.
In 2002 the Balfour Street premises were sold and the theatre group was forced to move again. The first move was to the old Valley Twin Cinemas in Brunswick Street, where the group’s reputation continued to grow. Sadly, after two years at that venue the lease was not renewed and the group yet again began looking for a new home. In the meantime we performed in a variety of venues including Hamilton Town Hall, Trinity Anglican Church, a pub in Spring Hill, Jugglers Artspace, Brisbane Arts Theatre and finally “Visible Ink” in Berwick Street.
The search for a permanent home continued and was finally rewarded by the discovery, in 2007, of Merthyr Road Uniting Church with its wonderful Brunswick Room, complete with stage and a sympathetic minister, Rev. Chris Holden, himself a retired professional opera singer, eager to have a theatre group under his roof!
We now have dedicated rehearsal and storage facilities at the church complex and are pleased to say that New Farm Nash Theatre Inc. is doing well.
