Hayswood Theatre was formed in 1969 by the Women's Literary Club to bring people to Corydon, to support the local economy and to promote cultural growth. The First State Capitol Building in the town square was the first performance space used by the Theatre beginning with performances in 1970, performing reenactments of actual trials that occurred there in the 1820's. Performances followed at the Harrison Grange Hall where the "Hayswood Players" started performing published plays. The Theatre, through the work of its dedicated Board of Directors and support from the local businesses and a loyal audience, has continued to annually present full seasons of plays.
Each year approximately 3,000 people attend the various performances at the Theatre, enjoying dining, sightseeing and shopping downtown before and after the shows. Because of its high quality productions, location in scenic Historic Corydon, and inviting atmosphere, Hayswood is often noted in articles and reviews as a "gem" and a wonderful place to experience the magic of live theater. The goals of the Women's Literary Club some 40 years ago are indeed being met and with the support of the community Hayswood Theatre will continue to thrive as the curtain opens on many great shows in the future.
