About Novato Theater Company

Who gave virtuoso performances worthy of multiple encores to keep the Novato Theater Company anchored in Novato? The City of Novato staff and elected officials. Turns out they’ve got some chops. They have really been partners, true partners, in helping us get to this point (from article by Brent Ainsworth.)

The community theater group, whose local roots date to 1919, had been without a permanent home since 2004 when the Novato Community House was red-tagged as a structural hazard by the fire marshal. Previously known as Novato Community Players, the troupe bounced around in vagabond style before finding a temporary home for several years at Pacheco Plaza in Ignacio. But the lease ran out there last year and NTC staged its productions in San Rafael as it hunted for a new home.

City Manager Michael Frank said he is glad the N in NTC has additional meaning now.

“They are key member of our community,” they’ve been around longer than the city itself,” Frank said. “It’s in everyone’s best interests to make sure they landed in a somewhat secure location so they could continue to offer the quality programs they do.”

NTC is settled into Suite C, between the Marin Dancewear and Theater Supply store and a beauty college. NTC’ restructured the interior of the 3,608-foot spot, formerly home to Calvary Baptist Church, and closed their 2012-2013 season with The Foreigner, May 25 – June 15.

In November 2012, NTC signed a two-year lease for the gift of $1 per year for the use of an old warehouse on State Access Road at the former Hamilton Air Force Base. The building as no electricity and needs some repairs, but it will suffice, Rubay said.

(Mayor) Pat Eklund who is passionate about Hamilton, got the whole thing started. She brought the City Manager into awareness of NTC plight. The City property specialist, Tom Adams. was brought into the picture which led to the deal for the storage location. Having this large warehouse near the theater for two year has taken a load off the company, not having to payfor a separate storage space. NTC is every thankful for this.

When NTC established its location at the Pacheco Plaza in 2006, one of its main goals was to fill in the gap for other performing arts groups that had also been displaced by the closing of the Community House, and we are continuing that tradition. Novato Charter Schools will take the NTC stage in January 2014 for the fourth year in a row. NTC also provides space for arts teachers. Presently the theater rents space for vocal coaching, play writing, and improvisation classes. Also, for the past three years, NTC has offered “Summer Stars,” a two week summer experience for children grades 3rd to 8th http://novato.patch.com/groups/announcements/p/an–the-ntc-musical-theater-summer-stars-workshop
