Georgia Southern University

About
Georgia Southern University’s Theatre & Performance Program—housed within the Department of Communication Arts—offers a hands-on Bachelor of Arts in Theatre that emphasizes both creative practice and scholarly inquiry. Theatre majors participate in a full production season each year, contributing as actors, designers, stage managers, directors, dramaturgs, and production technologists. With faculty-led classes and community involvement, the program combines immersive performance with theory, research, and cultural engagement.
Students engage with diverse theatrical traditions—ranging from classical and contemporary plays to original works, musical theatre, children’s theatre, and devised performance. Coursework includes theatre history, script analysis, performance styles, acting techniques, dramaturgy, design and management, and technical production modules such as sound, lighting, and video. Practicum courses ensure students contribute to productions while earning credit, blending theory and real-world application.
Productions are staged on both the Statesboro and Armstrong (Savannah) campuses, with mainstage shows held in the 150-seat variable-configuration Black Box Theatre and the 800-seat Performing Arts Center. Additional activities include short-play festivals, student showcases, and the annual Patti Pace Performance Studies Festival, enriching creative experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
The program is designed to cultivate socially engaged and globally aware theatre artists. Students explore theatre’s role in community, diversity, social justice, and contemporary cultural conversation. Faculty mentor students in research-informed theatre-making, encouraging critical and creative work that resonates beyond campus audiences.
Graduates leave Georgia Southern equipped with strong portfolios in performance, design, production, dramaturgy, and digital media. Many alumni pursue careers in acting, stage management, design, theatre education, or continue to graduate-level study. The program’s collaborative structure, regional partnerships, and academic depth offer a meaningful foundation for both creative and scholarly theatre careers.
