We like to say that in Crossville, “there must be something in that water.” What else would explain the incredible talent that emerges from our rural town? Or the artists who come here for a season and choose to stay? Here in the Appalachian Mountains we are surrounded by a rich musical heritage and culture. As we strive to bring the best theatrical experiences to our patrons, we also celebrate the unique sound and culture of our region. Our professional company members (performers, teachers, designers, musicians) are full time, part time and contract employees, and range in number from 25 to 65 employees during a season. Many have a decade or more of history with the organization as well as incorporating years here with freelance work, National Tours & Broadway credits. Our programming mixes new works with popular favorites, Southern playwrights and New Works from New York; literature and large musicals; Shakespeare and modern comedies. Actors are hired and work in rotating rep on a range of roles. We cast range & versatility, more than role or type. Our people teach the next generations and direct youth projects. All work on a professional rep schedule, varying weekly show lineups. Students grow into teaching & performing interns, then young professionals. Ingénues become leading ladies, then character players, sometimes gradually, sometimes week to week. We look for “keepers”- versatile, congenial, talented people who might stay here. Short term jobs become seasons. Seasons become careers. All work for quality, to strengthen the company & organization day to day, show to show, year to year.
The Playhouse is a professional theater employing a resident company & staff, for 350 performances year-round, with 1200 classes in three studios; complete production shops and warehousing for multiple productions. Our professionals identify talented, collaborative volunteer youth/ adults who learn, work effectively with others, and show potential to make a contribution to the company, organization and peers. Sets and costumes are rented nationwide & may return to our stages as needed. We recruit and train around 400 volunteers annually as ushers, house managers, concession & gift shop clerks, distributors for marketing materials, handymen, production assistants, running crew, landscapers and Board members. We cultivate and value a sense of community. Artists come for a season and then stay to make Crossville their home.
