About George Mason University

With our professional faculty, proximity to D.C.'s vibrant arts culture, and invigorating offering of courses and opportunities, Theater at Mason is the place to be! The School of Theater offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees and prepares students for graduate study or entry into the profession through rigorous, concentrated, and individualized training; however, students are encouraged to maintain wide-ranging interests within the school and throughout the university’s extensive offerings. Theater majors organize their advanced work within the major to include classes in areas of emphasis including performance, design and technical theater, and other theater studies.

Theater BA Concentrations Theater majors must complete their Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in one of the following areas: Design and Technical Theater, Performance (Acting and Directing), Theater Education for Theater Arts PK-12, or Theater Studies. Students must earn a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA to complete a BA. Bachelor of Arts students must use some/all general electives to complete a minor, double major, double degree or intermediate-level proficiency in one foreign language.

Theater BFA Concentrations Theater majors must complete their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in one of the following areas: Design for Stage and Screen, Performance for Stage and Screen (Acting and Directing), or Musical Theater Performance. Students must earn a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA to complete a BFA.

  • At Mason, you'll experience a focused School of Theater with 140 Theater majors within a large state university setting.
  • Each theater major is assigned a faculty mentor, someone to whom the student can turn when in need of career advice, guidance, or a sympathetic ear.
  • Our academic advisor meets with each major before freshman year begins and every semester thereafter to help students navigate the academic requirements of the Theater degree.
  • Full-time faculty, assisted by adjunct and administrative faculty, provide each student a tailored academic experience throughout their journey.
