Syracuse University

About
Syracuse University’s Department of Drama, part of the College of Visual & Performing Arts, offers conservatory-style training integrated with a major university environment. Students pursuing degrees such as the Acting B.F.A., Musical Theatre B.F.A., Design & Technology B.F.A., Stage Management B.F.A., or a Drama B.S. benefit from rigorous coursework in performance, design, theatre history, and dramaturgy, alongside a comprehensive liberal arts foundation. The program is recognized nationally and often ranks among the top drama schools in the country.
A standout feature is the close partnership with Syracuse Stage, a Tony Award–winning regional theatre housed on campus. Many department productions are co-produced with Syracuse Stage, allowing students to work alongside professional actors, directors, and designers. Participants may even earn Actors’ Equity Association points through select roles or backstage assignments—a rare opportunity in undergraduate training.
The Acting B.F.A. immerses students in performance technique, voice, movement, text analysis, improvisation, and on-camera training. From their first year, students may spend up to 18 hours per week in studio classes and production rehearsals, gradually earning opportunities to audition for departmental and Syracuse Stage productions. An actor-singer track allows talented musical theatre hopefuls to meld singing with intensive acting training. The Musical Theatre B.F.A. similarly supports triple-threat development with coursework in dance, voice, and dramatic interpretation.
The Drama B.S. degree offers flexibility for students interested in playwriting, directing, theatre management, or arts administration. The Theater Management track, for example, provides practical education in producing, casting, promotion, and operations through experiential learning with Syracuse Stage. Across all programs, students are supported with professional advising and encouraged to participate in international study programs—such as the Tepper Semester in New York City and semester options in Los Angeles or London.
With access to a rich network of faculty and guest artists, Syracuse Drama students regularly engage with visiting professionals, masterclasses, and workshops. Over four years, students may appear in or work on more than 160 productions, building extensive portfolios in performance, design, or production. Graduates leave prepared for careers in theatre, film, education, or graduate study and benefit from a strong alumni network that spans Broadway, regional theatre, and the entertainment industry.
