About Playhouse Players

Some seven years ago, Playhouse Players Inc. (PPI) took over the missions of the former Kew Court House Arts Association that embraced several forerunners of the Community Theatre within the eastern region of Melbourne.

In 1974, Camberwell Youth Theatre commenced with a production of Noah by Andre Obey, directed by a young David McKenzie at the Trinity Church Hall, Camberwell. It is followed with a major musical Oliver at the MLC Hall, Kew.

Since that time, under the names of Camberwell Theatre Company, then Boroondara Theatre Company, there have been some 240 play seasons (including 75 premiere one-act plays). There have been over 4000 participants with productions being staged at many locations throughout the inner and eastern suburb.

Sadly with the Boroondara City Council demolishing its Civic Theatre and creating administration offices, no other like venue has ever been contemplated or built by the council, unlike neighbouring councils, such as the City of Monash with The Clayton Theatre, a state-of-the-art facility.

Since the turn of the century, beside focusing on major works particularly those being studied by schools at the time, the emphasis has been on the antional Playwright Competition, starting in 2000 with three original one-act plays. Vacant Room by Jayne Coney, Typecast by Katherine Payne and Highly Strung by Tim Rockk, as finalists from a field of 55 entries Australia-wide.
