Point Loma Nazarene University

About

PLNU no longer maintains a full theatre major, but still offers a Theatre Minor housed within the Department of Communication Studies under the School of Humanities, Arts & Public Engagement. Although theatre has diminished in campus prominence, the minor remains available in the academic catalog and covers core areas such as acting, movement, playwriting, and directing.

Coursework includes Introduction to Theatre, Acting, Movement, Playwriting, and Directing, typically amounting to 17 units for the minor (including electives like Musical Theatre and Theatre Practicum). Production experience is encouraged through practicum and internships under faculty-guided supervision.

PLNU features a 177-seat performance space—Salomon Theatre—recently renovated in 2024 with upgraded seating, flooring, paint, and smart tech infrastructure. While the space is managed by the university’s Conference Services and used for events and summer programming, regular theatre performances are currently infrequent due to limited staffing and student interest.

Despite the absence of full-time theatre faculty and a traditional academic department, students interested in theatre may still participate through student-run initiatives such as the PLNU Theatre Club. Founded in 2024, the club organized events like New Play Festivals and improv nights, but has faced challenges including advisor turnover and building access restrictions.

Overall, while PLNU’s theatre offerings are scaled back compared to historic levels, the university still supports theatrical learning through minor coursework, occasional practicum/internships, and club‑based student activity. For students seeking more regular performance production and comprehensive academic support, transfer to institutions with active theatre departments may provide greater opportunities.
