RSO was founded in 2006 as a production company for new musical and dramatic works. For the first 8 years of its existence, it was based in Brookline, Massachusetts. It is currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Massachusetts Period Really Spicy Opera was a resident ensemble at Boston University from 2006-2013. Although its primary focus was opera during this period, the company workshopped numerous new plays, musicals, and new music pieces.
Minnesota Period Really Spicy Opera relocated to Minneapolis in 2013 and made a critically lauded Midwest debut at the 2014 Minnesota Fringe Festival with a revival of the opera The Frat Party. Since then, RSO has returned to the Minnesota Fringe Festival several times:
2015: Leanna Kirchoff‘s The Clever Artifice of Harriet and Margaret. 2016: Game of Thrones: The Musical 2017: A Pickle Game of Thrones: The Musical received the Twin Cities Arts Reader‘s Best of Fringe and Critic’s Pick awards in 2016. A Pickle was the best-selling show of its venue, received the Encore Performance, and was 100% sold-out for its entire extended run. It also received a Best of Fringe award from the Twin Cities Arts Reader.
