Tom Briggs is a Wisconsin native who began acting at an early age. As a teenager, he pursued performing and opened for many singers of the mid-20th century, including Diana Ross & the Supremes and Sonny & Cher. He then went on to receive his BFA in theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and later attended the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York City. Since then, Briggs has been most active as a librettist, director, and choreographer. Most notably, Briggs co-wrote the book for the stage adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musical State Fair with Louis Mattioli. Briggs has extensive experience in adapting existing musicals for concert or updated productions.
Briggs is the executive director of the Thalian Association, North Carolina’s state community theatre, the producing artistic director of St. Bart’s Playhouse in New York City, the director of R&H Theatricals, and the creative director of the R&H Organization. He has held teaching positions at the National Theatre Institute, Union College, Nicholai College, and New York University, and he serves as the official emcee of the Special Olympics.
