Scottish composer Judith Weir is known for her operatic compositions. Having studied music from a young age, Weir had the opportunity to study composition with the notable British composer John Taverner. This path led her to study composing at Cambridge University.
She has written commissioned works for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Adelaide, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, as well as several others. Alongside composing, Weir has also taken on many teaching duties at noted music schools, including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow.
