Alphonse Royer's name is most often remembered in association with his opera librettos, particularly for Donizetti's La favorite. However, during his lifetime, he was also an incredibly successful theatre manager, directing institutions such as the Odeon-Theatre, and later the Paris Opera. From his experience, and his work as Inspecteur General des Beaux-Arts, Royer authored a complete history of the Paris Opera. Other works of Royer's include adaptations of many Italian opera libretti into French, a dozen plays, as well as several novels and non-fiction works.
