A French librettist of the 19th century, Michel Carré is responsible for many famous opera librettos, and collaborated with a number of composers, such as Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet, Camille Saint-Saens, and Jacques Offenbach.
He also collaborated with Jules Barbier on several works, including a French adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet which was made into an opera by Ambroise Thomas.
