Thomas Hardy was an English writer best known for his novels such as Far From the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor of Castorbridge, and Jude the Obscure. In many of his works, Hardy engaged with questions of modern society and its strict moral codes. He was also a respected poet of the time.
In addition to his novels and poetry, Hardy was very interested in the theatre and adapted several of his novels for the stage (as did other producers and directors of the time). In 1908, a company of players in Dorset came together to dedicate themselves to staging Thomas Hardy's novels.
