Peter Whelan was a British playwright. Born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, he worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and wrote seven plays for them, including The Accrington Pals (1981), The School of Night (1992), and The Herbal Bed (1996). In 2008, The School of Night had its US premier at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. The play re-imagines the relationships between Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Kyd, and Sir Walter Raleigh.
