Biography
Betty Smith
Betty Smith (1896–1972) was an American author, playwright, and screenwriter best known for her beloved novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943). Celebrated for her vivid storytelling, emotional honesty, and deep empathy for working-class life, Smith became a literary voice for resilience, particularly among women and immigrants in early 20th-century America.
Born Elizabeth Lillian Wehner on December 15, 1896, in Brooklyn, New York, Smith was the daughter of German immigrants and grew up in the Williamsburg neighborhood, which would later serve as the rich backdrop for her most famous novel. Despite facing financial hardship and limited educational opportunities, she was an avid reader and aspired to be a writer from an early age. She eventually attended the University of Michigan, where she won several writing awards and honed her skills as a playwright.
Smith’s breakthrough came with the publication of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, a semi-autobiographical novel that tells the story of Francie Nolan, a young girl coming of age in a poor but loving Brooklyn family in the early 1900s. The novel became an immediate bestseller and remains a classic of American literature, praised for its lyrical prose, emotional depth, and powerful depiction of poverty, ambition, and family bonds. It was adapted into a successful 1945 film directed by Elia Kazan.
Following the success of her debut, Smith wrote several other novels, including Tomorrow Will Be Better (1948), Maggie-Now (1958), and Joy in the Morning (1963), all of which continued to explore themes of personal growth, family, and the struggles of women seeking independence and fulfillment. Though none matched the impact of her first novel, they solidified her reputation as a writer of compassion and realism.
In addition to her fiction, Betty Smith had a background in theatre and wrote numerous plays, many of which were produced in regional and community theatres. She also worked briefly in Hollywood as a screenwriter, contributing to film adaptations of her own work.
Betty Smith died on January 17, 1972, in Shelton, Connecticut. Her legacy lives on through A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, a touchstone for readers of all ages and backgrounds. With her honest, heartfelt writing, Smith gave voice to those often overlooked in literature and left an enduring mark on American storytelling.
