Molly Smith Metzler is an American playwright, screenwriter, and producer. She was born in Kingston, New York and attended the Juilliard School and graduated from New York University with an MFA in dramatic writing. Her plays include Elemeno Pea, Cry it Out, and The May Queen and have been produced regionally at Boston Playwrights Theatre, Detroit Public Theatre, and Actors Theatre of Louisville among others. Cry it Out won the Ovation Award for Best New Play and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Playwriting in 2018. She has also won the Mark Twain Prize for Comic Playwriting and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
In addition to plays, Metzler has written for a number of TV series and was a producer for the series Shameless. She also adapted the novel The Thing About Jellyfish into a film. She resides in Los Angeles and Kingston, New York and writes on a commission from Manhattan Theatre Club and South Coast Repertory.
