Peter Ustinov was a British actor and playwright. He was born in London, England and attended the London Theatre Studio to train as an actor. After making his London theatrical debut in 1938, he quickly established a name for himself. He appeared in both plays and films, including propaganda films during World War II. In addition to acting, he wrote plays, novels, and short stories. His best-known play is the Cold War satire Romanoff and Juliet. He also wrote and directed a number of films. Ustinov was active in world affairs and served in the British army during World War II. He was the president of the World Federalist Movement, an organization promoting global democracy. He was a member of English PEN, an international association of writers that advocates for intellectual cooperation and freedom of expression. Ustinov died of heart failure in Switzerland in 2004.
