Anne Nelson is an American journalist, author, and playwright. Born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, she grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Yale University. She began her career as a journalist, covering wars in Central America. Her reporting in the Philippines won her the Livingston Award for best international reporting. Since 2003, she has taught at Columbia University.

Nelson wrote her first play in 2001, The Guys, about her experiences after the September 11 attacks. The two-character drama revolves around Joan, an editor who helps New York City fire captain Nick write eulogies for eight of the men he lost on September 11. Nelson largely based the character of Joan on herself. She has since written another play, Savages, about military occupation in the Philippines.
