Christopher Sergel was an American author and playwright. He was born in Iowa City and completed a degree from the University of Chicago. During World War II, he was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He began his career as a playwright in 1970 with a stage adaptation of the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. He also adapted books like Winesburg, Ohio, Cheaper by the Dozen, and The Outsiders.
From 1970 until his death in 1993, Sergel was the president of Dramatic Publishing, a play publishing company founded by his great uncle. He also acted as a mentor to writers like Arthur Miller, E,B, White, and Roald Dahl. Sergel died at the age of 75 in Wilton, Connecticut. His adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird continues to be performed throughout the country.
