Italian opera librettist Angelo Anelli was something of a scholar, having had a seminary education in Verona, and earning two degrees in law from the University of Padua. However, Anelli's true passion was poetry and literature, which led to his work in writing opera libretti.

Angelo Anelli's work was so successful during his lifetime that he held the post of house librettist at Milan's biggest opera house, La Scala. Although many of his works have gone into obscurity now, Anelli is still known for writing the librettos for two of the most popular bel canto operas: Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri and Donizetti's Don Pasquale.
