George Frederic Handel is a well-known composer from the baroque period, perhaps most famous for his oratorio Messiah. Although born in Germany, he later took British citizenship, after spending most of his life in London. He was a prolific composer of both sacred oratorios, and Italian opera, as well as many other instrumental works.
During his time in London he worked for Royal Academy of Music, became the house composer at Cannons, was commissioned to write for the coronation of King George II, and created his own company at The Queen's Theatre, until finally he took his opera company to Covent Garden Theatre. When the audiences started to move on from his style of writing, he found more fulfillment in his oratorios.
Among his most famous work for the stage are Giulio Cesare, Alcina, and Serse.
