DuBose Heyward is most known for his role in the creation of Porgy and Bess.
Heyward wrote his book, Porgy, in the 1920s. He was inspired by a story he had read in the newspaper. He and his wife, playwright Dorothy Heyward, adapted his novel for the stage. Composer George Gershwin was inspired by the story of Porgy and Bess, and reached out to Heyward about adapting it for opera. Hayward collaborated with Gershwin's brother, Ira, on the opera's libretto.
