Emmerich Kálmán became a popular composer of cabaret songs, which led him to composing many operettas, often using the influences of the cabaret world in his subject matter. Many of his operettas were adapted for different stages, so several different versions exist. Along with Franz Lehar, he was a leading exponent of the "Silver Age" of Viennese operetta, and was heavily influenced by Puccini and Tchaikovsky in his composition.
