Nathan Tysen

Nathan Tysen is an American songwriter, lyricist, and playwright known for his work in musical theatre, television, and children’s entertainment. Born and raised in Kansas, Tysen developed a love for storytelling and music early in life, which led him to study theatre and creative writing. He earned his BFA from Missouri State University and later completed an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. His midwestern roots and interest in character-driven stories continue to influence his writing style, which often blends humor, sincerity, and emotional depth.

Tysen is best known for his long-standing collaboration with composer Chris Miller. Together, they have created several acclaimed works, including Tuck Everlasting (2016), which premiered on Broadway and was praised for its heartfelt score and lyrical storytelling. Their earlier projects include The Burnt Part Boys, an Off-Broadway musical exploring themes of loss and friendship, and Fugitive Songs, a song cycle that examines modern wanderlust and escape. Tysen and Miller’s partnership has been celebrated for its fresh, poetic approach to contemporary musical theatre.

Beyond his collaborations with Miller, Tysen has contributed to a variety of other projects across stage and screen. He co-wrote the lyrics for the Broadway adaptation of Paradise Square (2022), earning a Tony nomination for Best Original Score. His work for young audiences includes songs for Sesame Street and The Electric Company, showcasing his versatility and ability to craft engaging, age-appropriate lyrics. Tysen has also written songs for Disney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical, further expanding his reach into family entertainment.
