Context
Morticia Adams is a beautiful, passionate, romantic woman. However, without her noticing it, her children have grown up. That means, as her daughter’s boyfriend’s mother points out, Morticia has aged too. To make matters worse, she overhears her daughter swearing to her boyfriend that she is determined never to end up like her mother who has stuck close to home and never seen the world. This sends Morticia in a tailspin. Is she old now, wrinkled with crow’s feet lining her eyes? Has she missed out on life and so many glorious opportunities? She asks this of Gomez, but her beloved husband fails to appease her fears. Here, Morticia attempts to pick herself up with a little pep talk, reminding herself that her inspirational motto has always been, “Death is just around the corner.”
Note: For the Addams family, to be sad is what we would experience as happy. Darkness is desirable, and violence and mayhem are fun.
Vocal Notes
Vocally, it's a dramatic alto/mezzo showcase with a sultry, cabaret-style delivery, featuring low, smoky registers building to powerful belts and sustained phrases evoking tango passion. Performance requires commanding stage presence—elegant movement with the Ancestors as backup dancers—plus emotional nuance to balance morbid lyrics with wry humor and sensuality, demanding breath control for long phrases and physical grace in gothic choreography.
Cut Suggestions
For audition purposes, take cut from sections without the Ancestors singing.
