Morris Isaac “Moose” Charlap was an American composer, lyricist, and conductor best known for his contributions to mid-20th-century musical theatre and popular music. He was born on December 19, 1928, and grew up with a strong foundation in music that led him to a successful career as a songwriter and theatrical composer. Charlap’s work is characterized by its melodic warmth, traditional musical theatre structure, and emotional accessibility, placing him firmly within the Golden Age and post–Golden Age Broadway tradition.

Charlap achieved his greatest theatrical success with Peter Pan (1954), for which he composed the majority of the score, including enduring songs such as “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” and “Never Never Land.” The musical became a staple of American theatre, particularly through its televised broadcasts, and remains one of the most frequently produced family musicals. His other prominent stage works include Whoop-Up(1958), a Western musical comedy, and Kelly (1965), a musical adaptation inspired by the life of aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman. He also wrote popular songs and film music, expanding his influence beyond Broadway. Morris Isaac Charlap passed away on December 17, 1974, leaving behind a body of work that remains significant for its melodic craftsmanship and lasting appeal.
