Alanis Morissette is a Canadian-American singer and songwriter. She began playing the piano at the age of six and recorded her first demo album in 1987, when she was just thirteen years old. Her first album, self-titled Alanis, was released in 1991 in Canada only. She recorded her second album while still at high school and then moved to Toronto to further her career. There, she met the songwriter Glen Ballard and the duo wrote the album Jagged Little Pill, which was released in 1995. The album’s first single was “You Oughta Know”, which became a huge hit and propelled Morissette to stardom. She won four awards at the 1996 Grammy Awards, including Best Album, Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song (for “You Oughta Know”).
Her fourth album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, received mixed reviews but contained the hit single “Thank U”. Morissette took on the role of solo songwriter on her next four albums. Her most recent album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road was released during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Morissette has had an on and off acting career since appearing in the children’s television series You Can’t Do That On Television in her teens. She has appeared in television shows such as Weeds, Sex and the City, and Nip/Tuck.
In 2018, the musical Jagged Little Pill opened at the American Repertory Theatre before transferring to Broadway. The musical has an original story built around Morissette’s music.
