Spanish composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri spent his whole life in Madrid, a fact which is tangible in the stories and characters found in his operas. He specialised in farce and comedy, with light stories about social classes and romance, but often with a political undercurrent Barbieri was one of the leading composers in reviving the Zarazuela form in the 19th century.
