Glenn Slater was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He graduated from Harvard University in 1990 and received the ASCAP Foundation's Richard Rodgers New Horizon Award with composer Stephen Weiner. In 2001, he wrote the lyrics for the Off-Broadway stage revue Newyorkers produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club. Slater began working with Alan Menkin on film Home on the Range (2004) and Sister Act the Musical (2006), for which he was Tony nominated. He received two subsequent Tony nominations for his work on The Little Mermaid (2008) and School of Rock (2015). On stage, he has also composed the lyrics for Leap of Faith (2010) and A Bronx Tale (2016), and co-wrote the book for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Love Never Dies (2010).

On film, Slater wrote the lyrics for the songs in Disney's 50th animated feature Tangled (2010). He won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media category for the song "I See The Light". He also wrote the lyrics for the songs of Galavant on ABC, teaming up once more with Alan Menken. Slater currently lives in New York City with his wife and two sons.
