Biography
Tom Eyen
Tom Eyen (1940–1991) was an American playwright, lyricist, and director best known for writing the book and lyrics to the groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical Dreamgirls. With a career spanning experimental theatre, Off-Broadway drama, and Broadway musical success, Eyen was a bold and provocative voice who helped redefine the possibilities of musical theatre in the late 20th century.
Born on August 14, 1940, in Cambridge, Ohio, Eyen studied drama at Ohio University before moving to New York City, where he became an integral part of the 1960s Off-Off-Broadway movement. Known for his outrageous and often satirical early plays, Eyen made his mark with works that challenged social norms and theatrical conventions. Notable early titles include Why Hanna’s Skirt Won’t Stay Down and The White Whore and the Bit Player, which garnered critical acclaim for their raw emotion and experimental style.
Eyen’s most iconic achievement came with Dreamgirls (1981), for which he wrote the book and lyrics. Inspired in part by the story of The Supremes and the rise of Motown, the musical tells the story of a Black girl group navigating fame, race, and betrayal in the music industry. With music by composer Henry Krieger and direction by Michael Bennett, Dreamgirls was a smash hit, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical for Eyen. The show broke new ground with its dynamic staging, emotionally powerful songs like “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and its celebration of African American music and talent.
Beyond Dreamgirls, Eyen collaborated on other musical projects, including the short-lived Rachael Lily Rosenbloom (And Don’t You Ever Forget It) and early workshop versions of what would become Dreamgirls. He also wrote for television and film and was involved in various revues and cabaret works. His ability to blend biting satire with deep pathos made him a unique force in both avant-garde and mainstream theatre.
Tom Eyen passed away on May 26, 1991, at the age of 50. Though his life was cut short, his influence endures—particularly through Dreamgirls, which continues to resonate with audiences around the world in stage revivals and through the 2006 Oscar-winning film adaptation. Eyen is remembered as a daring and visionary lyricist who gave voice to characters often overlooked and brought theatrical innovation and emotional truth to the American stage.
