Matthew Lombardo is an American playwright and producer known for his compelling biographical dramas and sharp, often emotionally charged dialogue. His work frequently centers on iconic public figures, especially women, revealing the private struggles behind their public personas. With a background in both theatre and television, Lombardo has earned a reputation for blending dramatic intensity with theatrical flair, capturing the complexities of fame, addiction, and identity.

Lombardo’s breakout success came with Tea at Five (2002), a one-woman play about legendary actress Katharine Hepburn. Originally starring Kate Mulgrew, the play offers an intimate portrait of Hepburn at two pivotal moments in her life. It was critically acclaimed and widely produced, establishing Lombardo as a master of the solo biographical format. His follow-up works continued in a similar vein, dramatizing the lives of celebrated and often troubled women in the public eye.

Another of Lombardo’s major works is Looped (2009), a Broadway play centered on actress Tallulah Bankhead during a notoriously difficult film looping session. The show starred Valerie Harper in a widely praised performance and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress. The play’s biting humor and exploration of addiction, resilience, and aging in the entertainment industry exemplified Lombardo’s gift for creating roles that are as challenging as they are rewarding for actors.

In 2012, Lombardo wrote High, a gritty drama about a nun working in addiction counseling, starring Kathleen Turner. The play tackled themes of faith, recovery, and redemption, and although its Broadway run was brief, it showcased Lombardo’s interest in darker psychological material and his willingness to take risks in storytelling.

Beyond writing, Lombardo has also worked as a producer and remains active in developing new works for the stage. His plays are often actor-driven and designed to provoke discussion, making them a favorite among regional and touring theatres. Through his focus on complex characters, particularly women confronting personal demons and societal pressures, Matthew Lombardo has carved out a unique voice in contemporary American drama.
