Richard Kapp

Richard Kapp (1936–2006) was an American conductor, pianist, and composer best known as the founder and longtime music director of the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, a chamber orchestra celebrated for making classical music accessible and engaging to wider audiences. Known for his clarity of style, elegant interpretations, and commitment to education, Kapp left a lasting mark on American classical music.

Born on October 9, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Kapp began studying piano at a young age and went on to earn degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Conservatory. He also studied conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he developed a deep affinity for the Viennese classical tradition.

In 1968, Kapp founded the Philharmonia Virtuosi, an ensemble made up of top-tier musicians drawn from leading orchestras in New York. Under his leadership, the group became known for its polished performances, recordings of both familiar and overlooked works, and innovative programming. Their albums—many of which were released on the CBS Masterworks and Arabesque labels—often featured shorter, listener-friendly pieces and became especially popular in schools, public radio, and retail outlets.

Kapp was also a passionate advocate for music education. He created programs that introduced classical music to young audiences and was deeply involved in community outreach. His efforts helped demystify classical repertoire for many and attracted new listeners to the genre.

Though primarily recognized as a conductor and interpreter, Kapp also composed original works and arrangements, further contributing to the musical life of his time.

Richard Kapp passed away on September 5, 2006, after a battle with cancer. He is remembered for his artistry, educational spirit, and his belief that classical music should be both beautiful and accessible to all.
