Amanda Green is an American lyricist, composer, and actress. Born in New York City in 1963, she is the daughter of actress Phyllis Newman and lyricist/playwright Adolph Green. She attended an actors' training program at the Circle in the Square Theatre School (NYC) and began writing songs and performing in Manhattan cabaret venues.
In the early 2000s, Green wrote the lyrics Up the Weeki Without a Paddle (2000; Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle nomination) and Once Upon a Primetime (2002). In 2003, she wrote the lyrics for and co-starred in For the Love of Tiffany: A Wifetime Original Musical, which was produced as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. Three years later, she collaborated with Tom Kitt on the musical adaptation of High Fidelity. Green teamed up with Kitt again in 2006 to work with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeff Whitty on Bring It On: The Musical. In 2012, she collaborated with Trey Anastasio and Doug Wright on Hands on a Hardbody, a stage musical version of the documentary film Hands on a Hard Body: The Documentary (1997). Green and Anastasio were nominated for the Tony Award for Best Original Score for their work on the show.
Green is the recipient of the 2013 Frederic Loewe Award from the Dramatists Guild and the 2004 Jonathan Larson Award. In 2021, she became the first female president of the Dramatists Guild of America.
