Marius de Vries is a British composer and music producer. He began his career as a keyboard player for the English pop-soul band The Blow Monkeys. After working in the early 1990s with The Sugarcubes, de Vries began a long collaborative relationship with Nellee Hooper, forming the team responsible for major recordings with Massive Attack, Björk, and The Sneaker Pumps. They have gone on to collaborate with some of the most famous recording artists such as Madonna, Tina Turner, David Bowie, U2, and Josh Groban.
Within musical theater, de Vries has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on several projects, including co-producing the cast album of Bombay Dreams and serving as contributing to the music production and arrangements for Love Never Dies. He has also produced the cast album of Jerry Springer: The Opera. To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, de Vries was tasked with collaborating on an album of musical settings of Shakespearian sonnets entitled “Take all My Loves”, featuring performers such as Florence Welsh, Helena Bonham Carter, and Carrie Fisher.
Beyond theater, de Vries has found much success in the world of film, working with directors such as Baz Luhrmann, George Lucas, Ron Howard, and Damien Chazelle. De Vries worked as the music director for the 2001 film, Moulin Rouge! and worked on the film soundtrack of the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet. De Vries served as the executive music producer for the 2016 film La La Land and produced the soundtrack. Other projects include Kick-Ass (2010), Lego 2 (2019), and CODA (2021). He is the winner of a Grammy Award for the La La Land soundtrack, and recipient of four other nominations. He has also received two BAFTA Awards and an Ivor Novello Award.
