J. B. Fagan

J. B. Fagan (1873–1933), born Joseph B. Fagan, was an influential Irish-born British playwright, actor, and theatrical manager active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for his elegant comedies and thoughtful dramas, Fagan played a significant role in shaping early 20th-century English theatre, both as a writer and as a director.

Fagan began his theatrical career as an actor before transitioning into writing and producing. He was especially associated with London’s Court Theatre and Oxford Playhouse, where he worked to promote serious drama and develop new talent. As a theatre manager, he was dedicated to raising artistic standards and bringing both classical and modern works to wider audiences.

As a playwright, Fagan’s most acclaimed works include And So to Bed (1926), a romantic and historical comedy about the life and loves of Samuel Pepys.
