Craig Carnelia

Craig Carnelia is an American lyricist and composer, born on May 10, 1949. Known for his introspective, character-driven songs, Carnelia has made a lasting mark on the world of musical theatre through both original musicals and contributions to revue-style shows. His lyrics are often thoughtful, precise, and emotionally rich, earning him a reputation as a writer who excels in portraying the inner lives of his characters.

Carnelia began his Broadway career with Working (1978), the musical adaptation of Studs Terkel’s book about everyday American laborers. Collaborating with Stephen Schwartz and others, Carnelia contributed several standout songs, including “Just a Housewife” and “The Mason,” which became popular among auditioning actors and cabaret singers for their lyrical depth and performative potential.

He went on to write both music and lyrics for Is There Life After High School?, a poignant exploration of adolescent memories and social dynamics. Although not a long-running Broadway hit, the show has enjoyed life in regional and educational theatre settings thanks to its universal themes and intimate tone.

Carnelia has also collaborated with composer Marvin Hamlisch on Sweet Smell of Success (2002), a dark, jazz-inflected musical based on the 1957 film. His lyrics for the show received praise for their sophistication and sharp insight into the world of ambition and manipulation in 1950s New York.

In addition to his stage work, Carnelia has mentored countless young writers through the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop. His dedication to the craft and to the next generation of lyricists has secured his place as both a creator and nurturer of theatrical talent.
