Biography
Jose Ferrer
José Ferrer, born January 8, 1912, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was a celebrated actor, director, and occasional librettist whose distinguished career spanned stage and screen. Though best known for his dramatic performances, Ferrer made several important contributions to musical theatre, including his work as a librettist.
Ferrer gained fame in the 1940s with his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac, a role that earned him the first Academy Award ever given to a Hispanic actor in 1950. Though primarily an actor and director, he also collaborated on musical theatre projects, including writing the libretto for Carmelina (1979), a musical composed by Burton Lane with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.
Carmelina, based on the film Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, told the story of a woman raising a daughter fathered by one of three American soldiers. Though the musical had a short Broadway run, Ferrer’s contribution as co-librettist reflected his interest in romantic and character-driven storytelling.
Beyond the theatre, Ferrer had a prolific film and television career, and he was known for his commanding presence and intellectual depth. His directorial efforts included both stage productions and feature films, showcasing his broad artistic talents.
José Ferrer died on January 26, 1992, in Coral Gables, Florida. He is remembered not only for his powerful acting and direction but also for his thoughtful forays into musical theatre writing, which reflected his deep appreciation for the art form.
