Dave Frishberg

Dave Frishberg (1933–2021) was an American jazz pianist, composer, lyricist, and vocalist renowned for his witty, sophisticated songs that blended sharp lyricism with a deep love of jazz tradition. With a distinctive voice—both literal and artistic—Frishberg carved out a unique niche in American music as a modern-day heir to the clever songwriting style of Cole Porter and Noël Coward.

Born on March 23, 1933, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Frishberg studied journalism at the University of Minnesota while developing as a jazz pianist. He moved to New York City in the 1950s and quickly became a sought-after sideman, working with legendary musicians such as Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Ben Webster.

Though an accomplished instrumentalist, Frishberg became best known for his original songs—often humorous, nostalgic, or ironic—many of which became beloved standards in jazz and cabaret circles. His most famous works include “Peel Me a Grape,” “My Attorney Bernie,” “I’m Hip” (co-written with Bob Dorough), and “Slappin’ the Cakes on Me.” His lyrics often celebrated quirky characters and mundane situations with elegance and wordplay, earning him a devoted following.

Frishberg also contributed music to children’s television, most notably the Schoolhouse Rock! series. His song “I’m Just a Bill” remains one of the most iconic and enduring educational songs in American pop culture.

Over his long career, Frishberg released numerous solo albums and was nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. He eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, where he continued to perform, teach, and record.
