Didier Van Cauwelaert
Didier Van Cauwelaert is a French novelist, playwright, and lyricist whose works combine imaginative storytelling with emotional depth. Born in Nice to Belgian parents, he published his first novel at the age of 22 and went on to win the Prix Goncourt in 1994 for Un Aller simple.
In theatre, Van Cauwelaert has written both plays and musical works. His most notable contribution to musical theatre is the French musical Le Passe-Muraille, for which he wrote the book and lyrics, with music by Michel Legrand. Based on Marcel Aymé’s beloved short story, the show was later adapted into the Broadway musical Amour.
Van Cauwelaert’s writing often blends fantasy with reality, exploring themes of identity, love, and transformation. His characters are frequently ordinary people placed in extraordinary situations, a hallmark of his style.
