David Rogers

David Rogers (1917–1993) was an American lyricist, librettist, and playwright known for his adaptations and original contributions to musical theatre. With a career that spanned Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional stages, Rogers became a respected figure in the world of musical theatre for his versatility, humor, and craftsmanship.

Rogers is perhaps best known for writing the book and lyrics for the stage musical Charlie and Algernon (1979), adapted from Daniel Keyes’ acclaimed novel Flowers for Algernon. The emotionally powerful show received a Broadway run and remains a unique example of science fiction adapted into musical theatre, praised for its sensitivity and ambition.

He also created musical adaptations of classic works and family stories, including a popular stage version of The Wizard of Oz, which has been widely produced in schools and community theaters. Additionally, Rogers worked on stage adaptations of beloved properties like Cheaper by the Dozen and A Connecticut Yankee, often bringing a light touch and theatrical clarity to well-known narratives.
