Patrick Marber is an English playwright, comedian, actor, and director. After studying English at Wadham College, Oxford, he began his career as a stand-up comedian and formed a double act with the author Guy Browning. He then worked on the radio shows On the House and Knowing Me, Knowing You as a writer and cast member. He currently co-writes the BBC Radio 4 comedy program Bunk Beds with Peter Curran.
Marber’s first play, Dealer’s Choice, opened at the National Theatre in 1995 and won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy. Hi next play, After Miss Julie was first produced as a BBC television play in 1995, before premiering at the Donmar Warehouse in 2003. Marber’s 1997 play Closer was a huge success and won the Olivier Award for Best Play. It has since been translated into several languages and produced across the world, as well as being adapted for film in 2004. His other plays include The Red Lion, Howard Katz, The Musicians, and Don Juan in Soho.
Marber is one of the UK’s leading directors and has produced successful revivals of Tom Stoppard’s Travesties (2016 in London; 2018 on Broadway), David Ives’ Venus in Fur (2017), and Eugene Ionesco’s Exit the King (2018). He also wrote the screenplay for the 2006 film Notes on a Scandal and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
