Jennifer Lee
Jennifer Michelle Lee (born October 22, 1971) is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and playwright best known for her groundbreaking work at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Raised in Rhode Island, she developed a passion for storytelling at a young age and eventually earned an MFA in Film from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Her early professional life included writing for theatre and independent projects, experiences that strengthened her voice as a character-driven dramatist.
Lee’s career accelerated when she joined Disney Animation as a writer on Wreck-It Ralph (2012), contributing significantly to the film’s emotional depth and world-building. She then made history as the first woman to direct a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature with Frozen (2013), which she co-directed with Chris Buck. The film became a global cultural phenomenon and earned the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Lee continued to shape Disney’s storytelling landscape through projects such as Zootopia (story contributions) and Frozen II, expanding her influence as both a creative and a leader.
In 2018, Lee was appointed Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, where she guided the artistic direction of the studio until 2024. Her work is noted for its focus on emotional honesty, strong character arcs, and the celebration of identity and self-discovery. Alongside her film achievements, Lee has maintained a connection to the theatre world through her early playwriting roots and ongoing support of emerging writers and storytellers.
