Biography
Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow is an American singer, songwriter, composer, and producer whose enduring career has made him one of the most iconic figures in pop music. Born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, he was raised by his mother and grandparents and showed an early interest in music. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and worked as a commercial jingle writer and arranger before launching his solo career. His background in both classical music and pop arrangement laid the foundation for his trademark lush, melodic sound.
Manilow rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of chart-topping hits that showcased his flair for romantic ballads and soaring pop melodies. His breakthrough came with the 1974 release of “Mandy,” followed by a series of enduring hits such as “Copacabana (At the Copa),” “Could It Be Magic,” “Weekend in New England,” and “Can’t Smile Without You.” Known for his emotive vocals and piano-driven style, Manilow became a fixture on adult contemporary radio and a beloved entertainer across generations.
In addition to his recording success, Manilow built a reputation as a dynamic live performer, headlining sold-out concerts around the world. His residency shows in Las Vegas and extended tours helped solidify his status as one of the best-selling and most consistently successful performers of the modern era. Over his career, he has sold more than 85 million records, earned multiple Grammy, Emmy, and American Music Awards, and received a Special Tony Award for his concert-style musical show Barry Manilow on Broadway.
Beyond his singing career, Manilow has written music for stage and television, including scores for musicals such as Harmony, Copacabana, and The Drunkard. He has also composed jingles for major brands like State Farm and Band-Aid early in his career—many of which are still recognized today. Manilow’s work has always bridged the gap between pop, theatre, and classical traditions, showcasing his skill as both a composer and entertainer.
Openly gay and married to his longtime partner Garry Kief, Manilow came out publicly later in life and has spoken openly about the importance of authenticity and support from his fanbase. Despite changing musical trends, Barry Manilow remains a beloved figure, often affectionately referred to as “the king of schmaltz” for his heartfelt, unabashedly sentimental songs. His legacy continues through his recordings, performances, and influence on generations of musicians and songwriters.
