Originally from Long Island, New York, Richard Greenberg attended Princeton University. There, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in English, and had the opportunity to study with Joyce Carol Oates. While he originally attended Harvard to pursue a graduate degree in literature, he ultimately enrolled in the playwriting program at the Yale School of Drama.
Greenberg has written for television, but it is his work in theatre that has made him a standout. In 2003, he won the Tony Award for Take Me Out (which was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize). Take Me Out also earned him the Drama Desk Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, the Drama League Award, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Other plays that have received strong and positive acclaim include Three Days of Rain (1998), The Dazzle (2002), andThe Assembled Parties (2013). Greenberg's subject have varied throughout his plays (from baseball, to LGBTQ stories, to average middle-class life).
