Nicholas Wright (born 1940) is a South African-born British playwright and screenwriter renowned for his psychologically insightful, theatrically inventive, and emotionally resonant plays. With a career spanning over five decades, Wright has created a diverse body of work that explores identity, creativity, politics, and the complexity of human relationships.

Wright was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and moved to London as a teenager, where he trained as an actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He began his theatrical career at the Royal Court Theatre, later becoming a prominent dramaturg, script editor, and eventually an acclaimed playwright.

His breakout play, Treetops (1978), was followed by a string of notable successes, including The Reporter (2007), about the life and death of British journalist James Mossman, and Vincent in Brixton (2002), which imagined the young Vincent van Gogh’s formative years in London. Vincent in Brixton won the Olivier Award for Best New Play and transferred to Broadway, earning widespread acclaim for its poetic depth and historical imagination.

Wright is also known for his adaptations, including stage versions of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials (co-adapted with director Nicholas Hytner for the National Theatre), Emile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin, and Patrick Hamilton’s The Slaves of Solitude. His work often bridges literature and theatre, bringing complex characters and rich narratives to the stage with clarity and emotional intelligence.

In addition to writing, Wright has served in leadership roles at major institutions, including the Royal National Theatre, where he was Associate Director, and he has been instrumental in developing new work and nurturing playwrights.

Nicholas Wright’s contributions to contemporary theatre are marked by intellectual rigor, compassion, and a keen understanding of character and story. His plays continue to captivate audiences with their blend of elegance, insight, and human vulnerability.
